The End of the Road

Tuesday September 20, 2022 Did you notice the blogging suddenly stopped as we approached the end of our journeys? On our last day in Colmar, we made a day trip to Strasbourg where we took a boat tour of the city. On Sunday, we drove to Zurich. We spent the day in Zurich walking around the old town, and our traveling buddies departed home but with a layover at LAX until Monday morning. On Monday, we had a gruesome 24 hour trip home capped by a 1 1/2 hour Uber wait at the airport at 1 AM. We’re all finally back home in the US after an exhausting but exhilarating trip. Before ending the blog here are a few shots from Strasbourg and Zurich. Thanks for following along.  Janet & Todd Cathédrale Notre Dame at Strasbourg Beautiful Stained Glass  Glass covered boat kept us dry in the rain Janet laughing at another selfie. She thought we should print a full album of selfies.  Another candy shop. This one in Strasbourg.  And of course there were pretzel shops  More Swi...

More Fun in Colmar

Friday September 16, 2022 Today we relaxed in Colmar, browsing about old town with some shopping. We managed to get a reservation at a popular Michelin Guide Restaurant for lunch, and later visited the Bartholdi Museum housed in the birthplace of Auguste Bartholdi, who sculpted multiple monuments including the Statue of Liberty. Auguste Bartholdi  Models of Lady Liberty  Shopping abounded; this one’s coming home Unfortunately, with only carryons, there’s not room for the Jelly Cat Pretzel  The wall decorations at the restaurant encouraged Todd to try the Ray Fish. Unbelievably Delicious! The crème brûlée was a perfect finish Of course, we continue to drink too much wine.

Castles, Villages and Wine

Thursday September 15, 2022 Today was a day to explore the area around Colmar, France. We toured Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle. It’s origin dates back to at least the 1100’s.  Over the years it has deteriorated, leaving it nearly in ruins until major restoration 1900 to 1908. It’s now a dramatic historic museum. Rain challenged our castle visit, but it cleared in the afternoon so that we were able to enjoy a few local villages along with some local Alsace wine.  The day ended back at our hotel with bread, cheese, cold cuts, and wine.   Castle Guard Castles and rain Charming village Wine tasting  End of enjoyable day back at our hotel

Musée Unterlinder

Wednesday September 14,2022 Today we had a relaxing day in Colmar, France visiting  the Unterlinden Museum, established in 1849. It is know for housing the Isenheim Alterpiece, an enormous movable alterpiece constructed and painted between 1512 and 1516. The building is a 13th century convent later joined to a 1906 former public bath house. The collection was superb. After the museum we strolled around town. Tonight we has a relaxing dinner at a typical Alsacian restaurant. Colmar

Tuesday September 13, 2022 Today is our  second day in Colmar; there was no post yesterday. Colmar is a small town in France south of Salzburg near the German border. The area has been under rule by both Germany and France. But the people here consider themselves neither French nor German but rather call themselves Alsatian. The old town is beyond charming, blending German and French culture. Yesterday we started exploring on our own. Today we had a spectacular local guide who brought the old town alive with her wealth of information.  Here are some of the photos over the last two days. Narrow roads in old town Our guide pointing out the inner wall of the city One of many town plazas We’ve fallen in love with pretzels.  Here a sign tells us this is the place! All of us with our guide The shops are wonderful to explore Delicious Macaroons and Pastries  The store of a local artist

Lucern

Sunday September 11, 2022 Lucern is a beautiful city on a lake surrounded by massive mountains. We meandered about old town during the day. Cocktails and dinner at the top of Mt.Stanserhorn, a mountain 1850 meters above Lucern sadly marked the end of our tour. To get there we rode a funicular then a cable car with an open upper deck. The ride was thrilling and the view from the mountain top was unbelievable. Tomorrow we drive to Colmar, France to relax with a couple of day trips.  The famous wooden bridge of Lucern We enjoyed lunch by the lake Funicular going up hillside Cows on the lower hillside Steep climb by cable car to the top Looking downward on every side On the top above the mountains and clouds Sunset on our bus tour

Saturday September 11, 2022 We checked out of St. Moritz after one night and took the Glacier Express train to Andermatt where we met our bus to travel to Lucern. The train had a panorama view and we thoroughly enjoyed the surroundings. Here are just a couple of scenes we selected.
